Local SEO: the highest-leverage move for most small businesses.

If you serve customers in a specific area — and most small businesses do — local SEO is where you'll see the fastest, most direct return. When someone searches [service] near me or best [service] + your city, Google surfaces a map pack of three local results above the regular listings. Winning a spot there often matters more than ranking #1 in the blue links below it. The good news: local SEO rewards fundamentals more than budget, so a focused small business can outrank larger, sloppier competitors.

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local asset. Claim it, verify it, and fill out everything: exact business name, accurate categories, hours, service areas, photos, and a real description. Keep your name, address, and phone number (your NAP) identical everywhere it appears online — inconsistency confuses Google and quietly suppresses you. Then build the signals that drive the map pack:

  • Reviews, steadily. Volume, recency, and your responses all matter. Ask every happy customer, make it frictionless with a direct link, and reply to every review — positive and negative — like a real human.

  • Photos and posts. Fresh, real photos of your work and team, plus regular Google Business posts, signal an active, legitimate business.

Keyword intent: ranking for terms that actually convert.

The most common SEO mistake is chasing big search volume instead of buyer intent. A term searched 10,000 times a month is worthless to you if the people searching it never become customers. Before you target any keyword, ask what the searcher actually wants — then build the right kind of page to match it.

  • Informational (how often should I service my AC) — the searcher wants to learn. Answer with a helpful guide or FAQ. This builds trust and feeds AI answer engines, but it rarely converts on the first visit.
  • Commercial (best [service] + your city) — the searcher is comparing options and getting close to buying. Win these with strong service pages, proof, and reviews.
  • Transactional (emergency [service] + your city) — the searcher is ready to act now. These are your money keywords. Point them at a fast, conversion-focused page with a clear way to call or book.
  • Navigational (your brand hours) — the searcher already wants you. Make sure your own pages and profile own these completely.

The practical rule: match the page type to the intent. Someone searching emergency [service] + your city should land on a service page with your phone number above the fold — not a 2,000-word blog post about pipe materials. Pointing a buyer-intent search at the wrong page type is one of the quietest ways to leak revenue, and one of the easiest to fix.

The site that wins isn't the one targeting the most keywords. It's the one that figured out which searches mean money — and built the right page for each.

Content that ranks (and content that wastes your time).

Search engines have spent years getting better at one thing: rewarding content that genuinely helps the person who searched, and demoting content that exists only to rank. Thin, generic, AI-spun filler is easier to detect than ever and increasingly worthless. The content that earns rankings is specific, experienced, and useful — written by someone who actually knows the subject.

For most small businesses, the content priority order is clear. First, nail the pages that map to buyer intent — your core service pages and location pages — because that's where revenue lives. SEO is only worth doing if you can tell whether it's working — and most businesses measure the wrong things. Impressions and total keyword counts feel good and mean little.
