When Local Services Ads verification is pending, it means Google has started screening your business but at least one required check is unfinished, under review, or waiting on a document from you. For a home services business that usually means one of five things: a background check invite nobody completed, a business registration that does not match your profile, an insurance certificate Google rejected, a license Google could not match to your name, or a Google Business Profile that is not linked and managed by the person doing the checks. The verification section of your Local Services dashboard shows which one.
If you are new to the format, start with our explainer on what LSA is in marketing. This piece assumes you have an account and it is stuck.
The badge is now Google Verified.
At the time of writing, Google has simplified badging to a single Google Verified badge for all advertisers. It replaced the older badges, including Google Guaranteed and Google Screened. The badge shows on your Local Services Ads profile and may appear on other Google surfaces, and verified profiles call out the specific verifications behind it.
The guarantee changed too. Google discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that came with the Google Guarantee badge. Eligible customers could request reimbursement for services booked through Local Services Ads before December 7, 2025, within 30 days of the job being completed. Bookings after that date carry no Google guarantee, so do not promise one in your ads, scripts or website copy.
Existing advertisers who had completed verification received the new badge automatically. New advertisers earn it by finishing the screening and verification process. Google states that the badge change does not affect Local Services Ads ranking.
What Google checks for home services.
Requirements vary by category and location, and Google marks background checks, business registration and insurance as required for select users unless a category says otherwise. Your dashboard is the final word on what your business owes. For the common US home services categories (plumber, HVAC, electrician, roofing, general contractor, house cleaning, pest control, locksmith, garage door), Google's requirements page lists these checks:
- Background checks: a business check and an owner check. Owner and field worker checks cover identity and criminal history, including US sex offender, terrorist and sanctions registries. The company check covers civil litigation history such as judgments and liens. There is no credit check or credit pull, and Google does not charge for it.
- Field worker checks: in urgent categories (plumbing, HVAC, electrician, locksmith, garage door), service professionals who work in customers' homes also need background checks. That includes employees, contractors, subcontractors and other workers on site. Office, clerical and customer support staff are not checked.
- Business registration: in the US, Google uses your D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet. Without one, you can submit a Secretary of State business registration, an IRS EIN, or a Department of Revenue registration.
- Business representative check: you pick the representative from the D&B list (or prove the link with a registration document showing their full name and the legal business name), then Google's partner Evident runs a private identity check against a clear, unexpired government photo ID.
- Insurance: general liability for these categories, at a minimum amount that varies by category and location and is shown on the upload screen.
- Licenses: business and owner licenses at the state level where local law requires them. Google validates them against government databases where it can, and you must also hold any county and city licenses that apply.
- Advanced Verification: locksmith and garage door also go through Advanced Verification, which can include a review of your Google Ads account, public data and a video interview with Google.
- Google Business Profile: a public, verified profile linked to the Local Services account, and the person completing the checks must be an owner or manager on it.
Google's overview also mentions minimum review requirements, but at the time of writing its home services listings state no minimum review count. Check your dashboard for any review requirement it shows.
Older guides name specific vendors. Google's current page says local background check partners run the checks and names Evident for the representative identity check. Results stay confidential between you and the partner, so questions and appeals go to the partner, not Google.
What pending and rejected mean.
Dashboard wording changes, but the Google Ads API documents the verification states Google tracks, and they map cleanly onto what advertisers see:
- No submission: the check is required, but nothing has been submitted. The usual cause is an invite sitting in someone's inbox.
- Partial submission: some, but not all, of the required verification is in. Common when the owner finished but the field worker roster did not.
- Needs review: verification has started but has not finished. This is the true pending state, where you wait on Google or the partner.
- Pending escalation: the item needs review by a Local Services Ads operations specialist. Expect this to take longer than a standard review.
- Failed: verification did not succeed. For documents, Google attaches a rejection reason you can act on.
- Passed: the check is complete. Not applicable means your category or location does not require it.
Some select US advertisers get accelerated verification after an initial risk review. They receive the Google Verified badge quickly but then have 14 days to finish additional steps, or ads stop serving. Google also re-evaluates advertisers over time, and skipping a requested follow-up review can cost you the badge, pause ads, or suspend the account.
How long verification takes.
Google's stated average is 3 to 4 weeks after you submit your documents, and it recommends starting as soon as the account is created. Two pieces add their own time. A new D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet can take up to 30 days, so look up an existing number first using the exact name and address on your Business Profile. The Business Profile step can take up to 24 hours to show as done on the verification dashboard.
If a background check fails, the business is ineligible for the program. After any errors are resolved and the decision is a final disqualification, you wait 30 days to reapply. A second denial means a 180 day wait before every further reapplication. So we fix name and document problems before resubmitting.
Why verification stalls.
Google's documented rejection reasons for insurance and license documents tell you most of what goes wrong. These are the stalls we look for first:
- Name mismatch: the name on the license or insurance does not match the business name on the Local Services Ad. Google lists this as a rejection reason for both documents and asks for names to match exactly across every document.
- Expired or short dated insurance: the certificate is expired, missing an expiration date, or valid for less than 14 days after submission.
- Incomplete insurance certificate: no policy number, no signature, the Commercial General Liability box not marked, coverage below the minimum, a quote or proposal instead of a final policy, or an editable file.
- Wrong category: the insurance does not cover the category you advertise, or a license is for a different trade than the job types selected.
- Unfinished field worker checks: in urgent categories, one technician who never opened the invite holds the whole account in partial submission.
- Business Profile access: the person doing the checks is not an owner or manager on the linked profile, or the profile is unverified.
- Registration gaps: no D-U-N-S record, or a D&B record with an old name or address that does not match the profile.
- License problems: expired, revoked, unverifiable, blurry, or the wrong document or license ID.
How we clear a stuck verification.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Background check shows no submission or partial submission | Owner or a field worker never completed the partner invite | Resend invites, confirm each person finished, remove former workers |
| Insurance failed | Name mismatch, expired, missing CGL box, signature or policy number, or coverage too low | Get a corrected signed certificate from your agent and upload a non-editable file |
| License failed | Name mismatch, expired, wrong trade, or illegible image | Align the license name with the profile, renew, or remove unlicensed job types |
| Business registration stuck | No D-U-N-S number or D&B name and address differ from the profile | Look up or apply for D-U-N-S, or submit a Secretary of State, EIN or Department of Revenue record |
| Business Profile step not done | Profile unverified, not linked, or checker is not an owner or manager | Verify and link the profile, request access, wait up to 24 hours |
| Badge granted, then ads stopped | Accelerated verification steps not finished within 14 days, or a follow-up review ignored | Complete the requested steps in the dashboard |
Is Google Guaranteed still available?
No. At the time of writing, Google replaced its older badges, including Google Guaranteed, with a single Google Verified badge, and ended the Money Back Guarantee for services booked after December 7, 2025.
