If your Amazon account is suspended, Amazon has deactivated your selling privileges and will not restore them until you show, usually through a written plan of action and supporting documents, that you understand the cause, have fixed it and have put controls in place so it does not recur. Most suspensions are tied to a specific policy, performance or verification issue listed in Account Health, and the path back starts with reading that notice carefully rather than appealing immediately.
We run our own Amazon Professional Seller accounts with Brand Registry, so we live inside Account Health and the policy notices it produces. This guide covers how Amazon flags accounts, the causes we see most often, how to write a plan of action, how the appeal process works, what not to do, and how to prevent the next one. It is operational guidance, not legal advice, and nobody can honestly promise a reinstatement.
What an Amazon account suspension means.
Amazon uses the word deactivation in most notices. A deactivated account cannot sell, listings go inactive, and Amazon may hold disbursements while the matter is open. Some actions are narrower: a single listing removed, a category or brand restricted, or an ASIN blocked pending documents. Read which one you have, because the fix and the urgency differ.
Amazon has also moved toward giving sellers more notice. Some issues now appear in Account Health as at risk before they become deactivations, with an option to respond in advance. When you see one of those, treat it like a suspension already in progress.
How the Account Health dashboard works.
In Seller Central, go to Performance, then Account Health. The page has four areas that matter:
- Account Health Rating: a single score summarizing your compliance with Amazon's selling policies, shown with a color band that tells you whether the account is healthy, at risk or critical.
- Customer Service Performance: Order Defect Rate, which Amazon targets at under 1 percent, built from negative feedback, A-to-z Guarantee claims and chargeback claims.
- Shipping Performance for merchant-fulfilled orders: late shipment rate, pre-fulfillment cancel rate and valid tracking rate, each with its own target.
- Policy Compliance: counts of intellectual property complaints, product authenticity and condition complaints, product safety issues, listing policy violations, restricted product violations and review policy violations, each linked to the specific notice.
Every open item links to the notice, the affected ASINs and, where available, an appeal or document upload path. That link is where your response goes, not a general support case.
The most common causes of suspension.
Most suspensions fall into a handful of buckets. The notice usually tells you which one, even when the language is generic.
| Cause | What triggers it | What a strong response usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Seller verification | Identity, business or bank details Amazon cannot confirm, or a failed video call | Clear, matching documents: ID, business registration, utility or bank statement, all with consistent names and addresses |
| Product authenticity complaints | Buyers or rights owners say the item is not genuine | Supplier invoices from the manufacturer or authorized distributor, supplier contact details, quantities that cover sales |
| Intellectual property complaints | A rights owner reports trademark, copyright or patent infringement | Proof of authorization, or a retraction from the rights owner; removal of the listings in question |
| Performance metrics | Order Defect Rate, late shipment or cancel rates outside target | Specific operational fixes: carrier changes, cutoff times, inventory sync, customer service process |
| Related accounts | Amazon links the account to another account that was deactivated | Explanation of the relationship with evidence, or proof the link is incorrect |
| Restricted or unsafe products | Listing items that need approval or violate product safety policy | Removal of listings, compliance documents, and a catalog review process |
Two notes on authenticity. Amazon generally wants invoices, not receipts or order confirmations, and it looks for a supply chain it can verify. And a complaint does not mean you sold a counterfeit; sometimes it means a buyer received a used or damaged unit and described it as fake. The root cause still has to be found and addressed.
How to write a plan of action.
A plan of action is the written explanation Amazon reviews before deciding whether to reinstate. Reviewers read many of them. The ones that work are short, specific and consistent with the evidence attached.
“Amazon does not reinstate apologies. It reinstates a root cause it believes, fixes it can see and controls it expects to hold.”
How appeals and escalation work.
After you submit, Amazon may reinstate, ask for more information, or deny. A request for more information is not a loss; it tells you which part of the plan was not convincing. Answer that specific gap rather than resubmitting the whole plan with new wording.
If an appeal is denied, read the reason and fix the gap before trying again. Repeated near-identical submissions rarely help. Where a matter involves an intellectual property complaint, contacting the rights owner to resolve the issue and obtain a retraction is often the most direct route. If significant funds are held, the account involves a legal dispute, or you believe the decision is wrong on the facts, speak with an attorney who handles marketplace matters about your options, including the dispute terms in Amazon's Business Solutions Agreement.
What usually goes wrong.
- Opening a new seller account to keep selling. Amazon links accounts through many signals, and a second account can be deactivated as related and damage the original appeal.
- Appealing immediately with a generic template before understanding the cause, which uses up credibility on the first read.
- Blaming Amazon, the buyer or a competitor in the plan of action instead of explaining what you controlled and changed.
- Submitting invoices that are edited, incomplete, from an unverifiable source, or that do not cover the units sold. Documents that are not genuine can end the account permanently.
- Sending the same plan through many channels at once, which creates duplicate cases and inconsistent answers.
- Paying anyone who claims inside access to Amazon or guaranteed reinstatement. Nobody legitimate can offer either.
How to prevent the next suspension.
Most deactivations are visible early: an authenticity complaint left unanswered, a listing policy warning ignored, a metric drifting toward its target. Prevention is mostly routine. Review Account Health weekly with a named owner. Respond to every policy notice, even minor ones. Keep invoices from every supplier organized by ASIN and date. Vet suppliers before buying, especially for brands you do not own. Check new listings against restricted product rules before publishing. If you own the brand, enroll in Brand Registry so you control your listing content and can report genuine infringement, as we cover on our Amazon Brand Registry and protection page.
Where the tools stop and the work begins.
Account Health tells you something is wrong. It does not find the root cause across six months of orders, reconcile invoices to units sold, rewrite a supplier process, or keep a weekly review running after the crisis passes. That investigation and the ongoing account discipline around it are the real work, and it is work Theory Road does as part of our Amazon account management.
How long does Amazon account reinstatement take?
There is no fixed timeline. Simple verification issues can resolve quickly once correct documents are submitted, while authenticity, intellectual property or related account cases can take much longer, especially if Amazon asks for more information. The biggest factor you control is submitting a specific, evidence-backed plan of action the first time rather than several weak ones.
What should an Amazon plan of action include?
A plan of action should state the root cause of the problem, the corrective actions you have already taken for the affected orders and listings, and the preventive measures that will stop it recurring. It should be concise, specific to the issue in the notice, free of blame, and supported by documents such as supplier invoices or updated procedures.
Can I open a new Amazon seller account if mine is suspended?
You should not. Amazon generally does not allow a seller whose account is deactivated to open another account without permission, and it links accounts through many signals. A new account is likely to be deactivated as related and can harm your chances of reinstating the original account.
Why was my Amazon account suspended for authenticity complaints?
Authenticity complaints come from buyers or rights owners who say an item is not genuine. Amazon usually asks for invoices from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor covering the units sold. Sometimes the cause is a used, damaged or mislabeled unit rather than a counterfeit, but the plan of action still needs to identify and fix it.
Does Amazon hold funds when an account is suspended?
Amazon may hold disbursements while an account is deactivated and an appeal is pending, and its policies describe when funds can be held or released. If a significant balance is held or the case is disputed, consult an attorney who handles marketplace matters about your rights under Amazon's Business Solutions Agreement.
