In Klaviyo vs Mailchimp, Klaviyo is usually the better fit for an e-commerce store that sells through Shopify or a similar platform, because it pulls order, product and on-site behavior data into each profile and builds segments and flows on top of it. Mailchimp is a capable, simpler email platform that is often enough for a small catalog, a service business, or a brand whose email is mostly a newsletter. The decision turns on how much of your revenue depends on behavior-triggered email and data-driven segments.
This piece compares data depth, flows, segmentation, SMS, deliverability and pricing structure, explains when Mailchimp is enough, and lays out the migration steps we use.
What Each Platform Is Built Around.
Klaviyo is a customer data and messaging platform for commerce. Its core object is the profile, a record that collects every event tied to a person: viewed product, added to cart, started checkout, placed order, fulfilled order, opened, clicked. Email, SMS and push are delivery channels on top of that data.
Mailchimp is an email marketing platform whose core object is the audience, a list of contacts with tags, groups and merge fields. It has added automations (Customer Journeys), e-commerce integrations and SMS over the years, and it serves a much broader range of businesses than online stores.
Everything else in this comparison follows from that starting point. One is shaped around what a customer did in your store. The other is shaped around who is on your list.
E-commerce Data Depth and Segmentation.
Klaviyo's Shopify integration syncs customers, orders, products and catalog data, and its on-site tracking records viewed product and active on site events. That means you can build segments like "bought from the skincare collection twice, spent over a set amount, has not ordered in 90 days, and viewed a product this week" without custom work. Klaviyo also calculates predictive fields such as expected date of next order and predicted lifetime value once a store has enough order history.
Mailchimp connects to Shopify, WooCommerce and other platforms and can segment on purchase activity, products bought and total spend. For many stores that is enough. Where it tends to fall short is event depth: browse behavior, catalog-level filters, and conditions that combine several events over time are harder or not possible, and syncing custom events usually needs its API.
The practical test: write down the five segments you would actually send to next month. If they are all tag or list based, Mailchimp handles them. If they depend on product, category, timing or on-site behavior, Klaviyo will save you work every week.
Flows, SMS and Deliverability.
Flows. Both platforms run automated sequences. Klaviyo ships prebuilt flows for welcome series, abandoned checkout, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment, winback and sunset, with conditional splits on any profile or event data and dynamic product blocks that pull the exact items a customer viewed. Mailchimp's Customer Journeys cover welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase paths with branching, and they work well when the logic is simple. Our guide to Klaviyo email flows for e-commerce covers the flow set we build first.
SMS. Klaviyo runs SMS and MMS in the same flows as email, with separate SMS consent tracked per profile, and bills SMS by credits on top of the email plan. Mailchimp offers SMS as an add-on in supported countries. If SMS is a real channel for you, keeping it in the same flow builder as email is a meaningful advantage.
Deliverability. Neither platform guarantees inbox placement. Both let you authenticate a custom sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which Gmail and Yahoo now require of bulk senders. What moves deliverability is list hygiene, engagement-based sending, and sunset flows that stop mailing people who never open. Klaviyo's segment-first design makes engaged-only sending easy to maintain. Mailchimp can do it with segments, it just takes more manual upkeep.
“Most stores do not need more campaigns. They need the six flows that should have been running since launch.”
How Each Is Priced.
Both tools scale with audience size, which is why list hygiene is also a cost lever.
- Klaviyo bills email by the number of active profiles, with a free tier for very small lists, an email plan, and an email plus SMS plan where SMS usage is billed as credits. The bill steps up as active profiles grow.
- Mailchimp offers Free, Essentials, Standard and Premium tiers, billed by the number of contacts in your audience, with a monthly email send limit tied to the plan. Higher tiers add advanced automation, segmentation and reporting.
- On Mailchimp, unsubscribed contacts that remain in an audience can still count toward your contact total, so archiving them is a routine cost control.
- On either platform, suppressing long-term non-engagers lowers cost and usually improves deliverability at the same time.
List prices change often on both, so check each vendor's pricing page for current figures at your list size. At small list sizes Mailchimp is usually cheaper. As a store grows, compare the cost difference against the revenue the richer flows and segments produce, not against each other in isolation.
| Factor | Klaviyo | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Profile with every store and message event | Audience of contacts with tags and fields |
| Store data | Orders, products, catalog, browse events | Purchase activity and products bought |
| Segmentation | Any event, property or predicted value over time | Tags, groups, fields and purchase conditions |
| Flows | Deep prebuilt flow library, dynamic product blocks | Customer Journeys, simpler branching |
| SMS | Native, same flows as email, credit based | Add-on in supported countries |
| Billing unit | Active profiles, plus SMS credits | Contacts, with send limits per plan |
| Best fit | Shopify and DTC brands growing on repeat purchase | Small catalogs, newsletters, service businesses |
When Mailchimp Is Enough.
Mailchimp is a sensible choice when the catalog is small, most revenue comes from first purchases rather than repeat orders, email is mainly a newsletter or announcement channel, or the business is not primarily e-commerce. A bakery with online preorders, a consultant with a monthly newsletter, or a brand in its first months with a few hundred customers can run well on Mailchimp.
The signal to move is specific: you want browse abandonment, product-level segments, replenishment timing, or SMS in the same flows, and you find yourself exporting lists to build them. If none of those apply, stay put and put the effort into content and list growth.
How to Migrate From Mailchimp to Klaviyo.
What Usually Goes Wrong.
- Unsubscribed contacts imported as subscribed, which creates compliance risk and spam complaints.
- Sending the full historical list on day one from a new sending domain, which damages reputation.
- Both platforms running abandoned cart at once during the cutover, so customers get duplicate emails.
- Store integration connected but on-site tracking never installed, so browse abandonment has no data.
- Flow filters left off, so customers who already purchased keep receiving abandoned checkout emails.
- No sunset flow, so the profile count and the bill keep growing with people who never open.
Where the Software Stops and the Work Begins.
Either tool is only as good as the data connection, the flow logic, the consent handling and the testing behind it. The revenue difference between a store running six well-built flows and one sending weekly campaigns is usually larger than the difference between the two platforms. Setup, migration and ongoing flow management is work Theory Road does, and our Klaviyo page covers how we run it.
Is Klaviyo better than Mailchimp for Shopify?
For most Shopify stores that rely on repeat purchases, yes. Klaviyo syncs orders, products and browsing behavior into each profile, which makes product-level segments, browse abandonment and dynamic product emails straightforward. Mailchimp connects to Shopify too and works well for smaller catalogs or stores whose email is mainly a newsletter.
Is Klaviyo more expensive than Mailchimp?
At small list sizes Klaviyo is usually more expensive, and the gap can narrow or widen depending on list size and plan. Klaviyo bills by active profiles plus SMS credits, and Mailchimp bills by contacts with send limits. Compare the cost difference against the revenue that richer flows and segments produce, and check both pricing pages for current figures.
Can I move my Mailchimp subscribers to Klaviyo?
Yes. Export subscribed, unsubscribed and cleaned contacts separately from Mailchimp, import subscribers with their consent status, and add unsubscribed and bounced addresses to Klaviyo suppressions. Authenticate your sending domain first and warm up by mailing engaged contacts before the full list.
Does Mailchimp have abandoned cart emails?
Yes. With a connected store, Mailchimp Customer Journeys can send abandoned cart emails, along with welcome and post-purchase messages. The logic and product personalization are simpler than Klaviyo's, and browse abandonment based on viewed products is more limited, but for many small stores it covers the most important recovery email.
Which has better deliverability, Klaviyo or Mailchimp?
Neither guarantees better inbox placement. Deliverability depends mostly on domain authentication with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, sending to engaged subscribers, removing bounces and non-openers, and consistent volume. Both platforms support all of that. Klaviyo makes engaged-only segments easier to maintain, which helps in practice.
