Squarespace vs WordPress for a Business That Wants Leads.

Squarespace is the faster way to a good-looking site. WordPress is the more controllable way to a site that produces and tracks leads. Here is how we decide between them, and how to move without losing rankings.

Squarespace vs WordPress comes down to control versus convenience. Squarespace gives a small business a well designed, hosted, secure site with almost no maintenance, while self-hosted WordPress gives full control over URLs, redirects, schema, forms and integrations at the cost of owning upkeep. If the website is a brochure, Squarespace is usually enough. If the website is the main source of leads, and those leads need to flow into a CRM with the source attached, WordPress is usually the stronger base.

This piece covers ownership, speed, SEO control, integrations with CRMs and call tracking, cost over time, when each platform is the right call, and a step by step migration plan that protects rankings.

What Each Platform Actually Is.

Squarespace is a hosted website builder: one subscription covers hosting, the SSL certificate, templates, a drag and drop editor, forms, a blog, basic commerce and a built-in sitemap. You work inside the features Squarespace provides. WordPress in this comparison means self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org: open source software you install on hosting you choose, extended with themes and plugins. It is not the same as WordPress.com, which is a hosted service with its own plan limits.

The distinction matters because most of the tradeoffs below follow from it. Squarespace decides how the server, the code and the URL structure behave. With WordPress, you decide, which means you also carry the consequences.

Ownership, Maintenance and Speed.

Ownership. On Squarespace, your content lives on their platform. You can export pages and blog posts in a WordPress compatible format, but product pages, some block types, styling and form settings do not export cleanly. On self-hosted WordPress, you own the files and the database outright and can move hosts with a full backup. For a business that expects to be around for ten years, that portability is worth weighing.

Maintenance. Squarespace patches itself. WordPress needs core, theme and plugin updates, backups, uptime monitoring and a security layer. Most WordPress sites that get hacked are running outdated plugins that nobody was assigned to update. If no one owns that job, WordPress becomes a liability.

Speed. A lean Squarespace site on a modern template is reasonably fast out of the box, but you cannot tune caching, server response or how scripts load. WordPress can be faster or much slower than Squarespace depending on hosting, theme weight and plugin count. A well built WordPress site on good managed hosting with caching and optimized images will beat most builder sites on Core Web Vitals. A page builder theme with forty plugins on cheap shared hosting will not.

SEO Control: URLs, Redirects and Schema.

Both platforms can rank. The difference is how much of the technical layer you can shape.

  • URLs: Squarespace lets you set page slugs, but collection items such as blog posts and products sit under their collection URL, so the path prefix is fixed by the collection. WordPress lets you define permalink structures, custom post types and category bases however the site needs.
  • Redirects: Squarespace handles 301 redirects through the URL Mappings panel in its developer settings, one rule per line, with limited pattern matching. WordPress handles redirects through a plugin such as Redirection or at the server level, with regex, logging of 404s and bulk import.
  • Schema: Squarespace outputs basic structured data automatically, and custom JSON-LD goes in through code injection on plans that include it. WordPress SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math generate a schema graph site wide, and custom schema per template is straightforward.
  • Indexing controls: Squarespace offers per page options to hide from search engines and an automatic sitemap. WordPress gives you control of the sitemap contents, robots rules, canonical tags and noindex rules by template or taxonomy.
  • Content scale: for sites with hundreds of service area or location pages, WordPress custom fields and templates make programmatic pages manageable. On Squarespace, each page is built by hand.

For a local service business with twenty pages, Squarespace SEO controls are adequate. For a business competing on dozens of service and city combinations, the WordPress control surface is the difference between a plan you can execute and one you cannot. Our WordPress page covers how we structure those builds.

The platform rarely decides whether a site ranks. It decides how much of the work you are allowed to do.

Integrations With CRMs, Forms and Call Tracking.

This is where lead-driven businesses feel the gap most. A lead is only useful if it reaches the CRM with the channel, campaign and landing page attached, and if phone calls are attributed as well as forms.

Squarespace forms send submissions to email and to a short list of storage connections, and anything beyond that usually runs through Zapier or a similar connector. Capturing UTM parameters and the gclid into hidden fields takes custom code injection, which is only available on some plans, and the native form block does not make it easy. Many teams end up embedding a HubSpot or other CRM-native form instead, which works but splits styling and reporting.

WordPress has mature form plugins (Gravity Forms, WPForms, Formidable) with native or add-on connectors to HubSpot, Salesforce, GoHighLevel and most CRMs, hidden field population from URL parameters and cookies, and webhook actions. Call tracking scripts for dynamic number insertion, such as CallRail's, install on both platforms, but WordPress lets you control load order and exclude pages cleanly. Server-side tagging and consent tools are also easier to deploy where you control the stack.

Cost Over Time.

Squarespace is priced as annual or monthly plan tiers, with higher tiers adding commerce features, code injection and lower or no transaction fees on sales. The bill is predictable and mostly flat. List prices change, so check the Squarespace pricing page for current figures.

WordPress software is free, but the real cost is hosting, premium plugins, a theme or custom build, and maintenance time. Managed WordPress hosting ranges from inexpensive to several hundred dollars a month for high traffic sites, and premium plugins are usually annual licenses. The build itself is where most of the money goes. Over three to five years, a well run WordPress site typically costs more than Squarespace in cash, and the question is whether the extra lead volume and attribution justify it.

When Each Platform Is Right.

Choose Squarespace when the site is under roughly thirty pages, leads come mostly by phone and referral, nobody on the team will maintain software, and speed to launch matters more than fine control. Photographers, consultants, small restaurants and early stage firms often fit here, and a good Squarespace site beats a neglected WordPress site every time.

Choose WordPress when organic search and paid landing pages drive meaningful lead volume, you need programmatic service or location pages, forms must feed a CRM with full attribution, or you plan to run server-side tracking and conversion APIs. It is also the right call when you want to own the asset outright. The condition is that someone, internal or an agency, owns hosting and updates.

If you are already on Squarespace and it works, do not move just because WordPress is more flexible. Move when a specific limit, such as redirects, attribution or page scale, is blocking revenue.

How to Migrate Without Losing Rankings.

Most ranking losses after a platform change come from broken URLs, not the new platform. The sequence below is the one we follow, and our full website migration checklist goes deeper on each step.

Crawl and export everything.
Crawl the live site with a crawler such as Screaming Frog, export every indexable URL, title, meta description and H1, and pull the top landing pages and linked pages from Google Search Console and your backlink tool.
Build the URL map.
Map every old URL to its new URL in a spreadsheet. Keep URLs identical where possible. Where the Squarespace collection prefix changes, such as /blog/post-name, decide whether to keep it on WordPress or redirect.
Carry content and metadata over.
Move page copy, titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text and internal links. Rebuild schema in the SEO plugin. Do not rewrite the top ranking pages during the move.
Rebuild tracking on staging.
Install GA4 and Google Tag Manager, form to CRM connections with hidden UTM fields, and call tracking on the staging site. Submit test leads and confirm they arrive with source data.
Launch and apply 301 redirects.
Switch DNS, load the redirect map, and test a sample of old URLs for a single 301 hop to the right page. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
Monitor for four to eight weeks.
Watch the Search Console coverage and 404 reports, fix stragglers daily in the first week, and compare clicks for the top landing pages against the pre-migration baseline.

What Usually Goes Wrong.

  • No redirect map, so old blog and product URLs return 404 and the backlinks pointing at them stop passing value.
  • Redirect chains, where Squarespace URL mappings and new WordPress rules stack into two or three hops.
  • Staging left crawlable, or the discourage search engines setting left on in WordPress after launch.
  • Forms rebuilt without hidden source fields, so leads arrive in the CRM with no channel or campaign.
  • Call tracking script not reinstalled, which silently drops phone attribution for weeks.
  • WordPress launched with no update or backup owner, which becomes a security problem within a year.

Where the Platform Stops and the Work Begins.

Neither platform produces leads on its own. The value sits in the build decisions: URL architecture, page templates that match search intent, forms that capture source data, call tracking, a CRM connection that works on day one, and a migration that does not throw away years of rankings. That setup and the ongoing maintenance is work Theory Road does as part of our web design and development service.

Is Squarespace or WordPress better for SEO?

Both can rank well for a small site with good content. WordPress is better when SEO depends on technical control: custom URL structures, bulk redirects, schema by template, and hundreds of service or location pages. Squarespace covers the basics automatically, which suits small sites with no technical owner but limits what you can change later.

Will I lose rankings if I move from Squarespace to WordPress?

Not if the move is planned. Rankings drop when old URLs break. Map every old URL to a new one, apply 301 redirects at launch, carry titles and content over unchanged, and monitor Search Console for several weeks. Temporary fluctuation is normal, but a mapped migration usually recovers within weeks.

Is WordPress cheaper than Squarespace?

The WordPress software is free, but hosting, premium plugins, the build and maintenance usually make it more expensive in cash over several years. Squarespace is a flat subscription. WordPress is worth the extra cost when the control it gives produces more leads or better attribution than the difference in spend.

Can Squarespace connect to a CRM like HubSpot?

Yes, but usually indirectly. Squarespace forms send submissions to email and a few storage options, and most CRM connections run through Zapier or an embedded CRM form. Capturing campaign data in hidden fields needs code injection on plans that include it. WordPress form plugins connect to most CRMs more directly.

Can I add call tracking to Squarespace?

Yes. Call tracking tools such as CallRail provide a dynamic number insertion script that you add through code injection, which requires a Squarespace plan that includes it. Test that numbers swap correctly by visiting from a tagged URL, and confirm calls appear in the call tracking dashboard with the right source.
