US market entry for UK brands.
UK founders often assume America will be the easy export: same language, familiar culture, huge market.
The shared language is exactly where many UK launches stall. American buyers read British understatement as a lack of confidence, notice British spelling in product pages and ads, and search for different words for the same things. The market is also far larger and more regional than a UK team is used to planning for. Theory Road runs the commercial side of US entry for UK companies: market read, positioning and copy for American buyers, a US storefront, Amazon US, paid media and search, PR and retail readiness, and reporting. We work alongside your accountant, attorney, customs broker and logistics provider on entity, tax and shipping.

How can we help you get found?
Next: name, email and budget. That’s it.
What the US market asks of you.
The US asks UK brands to sound different while staying themselves. American buyers respond to direct claims, specific benefits and visible proof. The same copy that feels charming in London can read as vague in Chicago. Spelling and vocabulary matter for search as well as tone: people type color, not colour, and diapers, not nappies. The market is also regional. Selling to Texas, California and New York is closer to entering three countries than one, with different climates, prices and competitors in each.
What goes wrong is usually a UK playbook shipped whole. A strong record on Amazon.co.uk or UK gift marketplaces does not carry reviews or rank across the Atlantic. A launch built on Royal Mail parcels from Britain was hit when the US suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries in August 2025, so US customers now meet duties and slower entry. Post-Brexit, many UK teams already learned customs paperwork for EU sales, which helps, but US sales tax nexus and state rules are new ground.
We start by rewriting nothing until we have read the market: US search terms, price bands, competitors and landed cost built with your customs broker and accountant. Then American copy that keeps the brand voice but states benefits plainly, in US spelling. We build the storefront, launch on Amazon US from US inventory, and run search and social in a few test regions before going national. For brands that need earned attention, we prepare the proof and story a US PR partner or buyer needs, then open retail and wholesale conversations with real sell-through data.

Where US launches stall.
The common language trap
British spelling, vocabulary and understatement signal foreign to US buyers and miss US search terms. Copy needs rewriting for American readers, not a spellcheck, while keeping what makes the brand distinctly British.
UK marketplace history does not transfer
Reviews, rank and badges on Amazon.co.uk or UK marketplaces do not carry over to Amazon US. A UK bestseller launches in America as a new listing with zero reviews and needs its own plan.
Parcel shipping after de minimis
Direct-to-consumer parcels from Britain used to enter the US duty-free under a low-value threshold. With de minimis suspended for all countries since August 2025, most brands need US inventory and a broker.
Planning for a regional market
UK teams plan nationally for one compact country. The US spans time zones, climates, price levels and state rules, so budgets spread nationally from day one usually run thin before any region proves out.
What we run for you.
US market entry strategy
A written plan covering target regions, price bands, channel order, budget by phase and the numbers that decide whether to scale, pause or change course.
American copy and search terms
We rewrite product pages, ads and email in US English with direct benefit statements, mapped to the words Americans actually search, while keeping the brand recognisably British.
Storefront and Amazon US
A Shopify store set up for US pricing, shipping and returns, and Amazon US listings with Brand Registry, A+ content and advertising run from the same catalog.
Paid media and search
Google, Meta and Amazon Ads launched in test regions, then widened as contribution margin proves out, with weekly reporting timed for UK afternoons.
PR and retail readiness
Story angles, product proof, reviews and line sheets that a US PR partner, buyer or distributor expects, coordinated with any US PR agency you retain.
Reporting across both markets
One view of US spend, orders, returns and margin next to your UK numbers, so leadership sees whether America is earning its budget.
How US demand gets built.
US rules to plan for.
Customs and duties.
De minimis duty-free entry was suspended for all countries in August 2025. Your customs broker confirms HTS classification, origin marking and current duty treatment for UK goods.
Sales tax registration.
The US has no VAT. Economic nexus can require registration in states where you sell above thresholds, while marketplaces collect on their own sales. Your accountant owns this.
UKCA is not a US mark.
Neither UKCA nor CE marking applies in the US. Electronics usually need FCC authorization and children's products need third-party testing. Your lab and attorney confirm requirements.
Claims, reviews and endorsements.
FTC rules cover advertising claims, influencer disclosures and review practices. US copy that becomes more direct must still be substantiated; we flag claims for your attorney.
Trademark filing.
Foreign applicants at the USPTO need a US-licensed attorney. A UK registration does not protect the name in America, and Amazon Brand Registry needs an eligible mark.

Questions from founders abroad.
- How to sell in America from the UK
- Start with a market read and landed-cost model, move stock into a US warehouse, then sell through a US storefront and Amazon US with copy written for Americans. Test paid media in a few regions before spending nationally, and open retail conversations once reviews exist. Your accountant, attorney and customs broker handle tax, entity and import work alongside us.
- Do I need to rewrite my website for US customers?
- Usually yes. US buyers notice British spelling and vocabulary, search with American terms, and respond to direct benefit statements more than understatement. We keep your brand voice and British character but rewrite key pages, ads and emails in US English so they rank for American searches and convert American shoppers.
- Can we still ship parcels from the UK to US customers?
- You can, but it is harder than it was. The US suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries in August 2025, so parcels face duties and entry processing. Most growing brands move inventory into a US 3PL or Amazon fulfillment. Your customs broker confirms current rules and duty treatment for your products.
- Do UK brands need a US marketing agency?
- Not always, but a UK team running America remotely often struggles with American copy, regional targeting, US platform rules and a five to eight hour time gap. An agency with US operators can run the launch day to day while your team keeps brand and product decisions. Theory Road works this way from Texas.
- What about US PR for a British brand?
- PR works best once there is something to point to: stock in the US, reviews, a clear story and retailers or a storefront where readers can buy. We build that foundation and the press materials, and coordinate with a specialist US PR agency if you use one, so coverage lands on pages that convert.
- Does our Amazon UK success carry over to Amazon US?
- No. Reviews, ranking, badges and sales history stay with Amazon.co.uk. Amazon US treats your product as a new listing, so you need a launch plan for reviews, advertising, pricing and inventory. Your UK data is still useful for keywords, images and forecasting, and we use it that way.
